Cat
Killed by
Mosquito
Spraying
| Just after midnight on Saturday August 6th, 2005 my
street was sprayed for mosquitoes by Clarke (http://www.clarkemosquito.com/)
Mosquito Control. One of my cats happened to be in the front
room window, which we did not think was a problem as the news reports
on the spray were that the spray was safe for people and pets. This
window is the closest window to the street.
However, within minutes of the spraying this otherwise very healthy
young cat literally fell out of the window. When my wife heard
Calvin collapse she called me into the room, I immediately went to aid
Calvin who had fallen and was laying on his side in distress. He was
having what looked like a mild seizure and gasping. I picked him up
and we ran with him to a local animal ER vet. Unfortunately he
died on the way. The Vets at the ER did look him over and saw no
obvious signs of a cause of death, no obstructions in his airway, no
wounds, etc. Calvin was only about 1.25 years old. He was a VERY
healthy and energetic young cat. At about 18 lbs, he was very strong
too.
Calvin, had been a feral cat we captured on our back doorstep with
the assistance of the "Spay and Stay" organization (http://www.spayandstay.org/index.htm)
approximately one year ago. As part of the Spay and Stay treatment he
was given a full physical exam prior to neutering, he was neutered,
and given full battery of vaccinations and treated with Revolution for
fleas and worms. Since that time Calvin has remained in our home as an
inside cat, NEVER going outside. Calvin's death is truly a senseless
tragedy as had we known of any risks to him or our other pets we would
have had all the windows and doors closed.
What can you do:
 | Warn anyone with pets, children or anyone with respiratory
conditions to avoid exposure to the mosquito spray. Keep your
doors and windows closed on spray nights. |
 | Contact Clarke to be put on their automatic call list so you are
notified on the day of spraying. |
 | Contact local legislators to ask that stronger warnings are
issued, and urge them to also push for better/safer methods to
control mosquitoes that transmit West Nile Virus. |
